Our 9 months in, 9 months out.

@artofchristianlove took this first photo of me a few hours before we left for the hospital — a day before our baby girl was born. I was tired of being pregnant, and I was nervous about all of the changes that were about to come.

The nerves are still here. So is the joy of being Shai’s mom.

We’re both learning new things about ourselves and each other. Some days are more smiley than others. Our bodies are constantly changing. I like to think that we bond over the exhaustion of the everlasting state of change.

Lucky for us, we’re not alone. 🤍

🌟Living the dream at #ONA24! I led my first @online_news session in my home city of Atlanta with @natalie_daher, @nicolenews and Hannah Wise — aka newsroom leaders I could rave about all day.

We presented our collective best practices for planning for breaking news, led about 150 journalists through four scenarios in small groups and offered a framework for attendees to take back home to their teams if they don’t already have a template to lead planning discussions. 📝

So happy to reconnect with old friends and mentors as well as make new ones. All in between pumping in the private, relaxing spaces ONA set aside for caregivers. 🍼 Proud to be a part of such an inclusive and supportive organization.

Wedged in between the borders of Brazil and Argentina, Iguazú Falls are absolutely breathtaking. Each side has something to mesmerize you.

On the Brazil side 🇧🇷, I couldn’t stop playing with the water at Devil’s Throat. In Argentina 🇦🇷, the wildlife spottings (especially the coatis) kept me on my toes.

The sniffles were temporary 🤧 (and worth it for the memories)!

My calendar reminded me to call you for our regularly scheduled chat. I know our talks will look a little different now, but I’m not ready to remove them. I’m still hoping to call to ask how are you, so you can say “fan-damn-tastic.”

Our calls started off with you saying hello and me introducing myself as “your favorite eldest grandchild.” In the last few months, this changed to “your favorite eldest grandchild and great grandchild.”

I’m so glad you were able to meet my new favorite person Shai. You were determined to be there at the hospital the day after delivery and hold my baby girl. Not even the cold winter weather could deter you. I was in so much pain that day. I was embarrassed that you had to hear me wail outside my hospital room as nurses worked on me so I could feel more comfortable after the c-section I hadn’t planned for. You came back in, asked to be moved to my side and quietly held my hand. I cried, but you assured me that it was all right.

And it was. I finally felt good enough to come see you, and you were able to feel how much Shai has grown and the strong grip she has. We watched the news like we’ve done for years. Watching CNN and doing the NYT crossword puzzles with you growing up was the start of my passion for journalism. I’ll always cherish getting to interview you as a WWII veteran for work. I learned so much about you from that opportunity.

At 97 years old, even in your final days, your curiosity and desire to learn was there. You had questions about ChatGPT and AI. As a judge, you raised skeptical questions about the legality and safety of such technology.

Yesterday, I held your hand at your hospital bedside, sang “My Funny Valentine” for you one more time and told you everything was going to be all right just as you told me a few months ago. Moments later you were free.

I hope Heaven has a lottery up there. I don’t know what you’re going to do if you can’t play your numbers. I wish I could have understood your strategy more, but I’ll settle with playing the numbers that remind me of you. One of them has gotta get me the jackpot.

Baby girl is one month old today. We’ve had many laughs, shed many tears and made memories that will keep our hearts warm for years to come.

Thank you to everyone who has blessed us with love and support. From the thoughtful gifts to the delicious meals to the text messages, we are so blessed to have a supportive community around us.

This year we got the greatest Christmas gift of all. Shai (pronounced “shy”) Amani Stegall was born on December 22, 2023.

Since we chose not to know the gender until the baby’s birth, we focused on picking a name that best captured how we felt about this new life we were bringing into the world. Some of the key changes we made:

1️⃣ @artofchristianlove added wall paneling and wood slabs to the shelves. 🔨 It not only gives the pantry a sleek look but also prevents items from slipping through the shelves’ holes. Don’t worry, the original shelves are still there underneath for support!

2️⃣EVERYTHING needed to be contained. 🫙 Previously we were doing half containers, half “zoning,” but it just created a really cluttered look. We were nervous to make the investment in the all container life, but honestly has made such a difference in us being able to SEE what we have and actually USE it.

3️⃣ Reusable labels! 🏷️ It was important to us that anyone could come into our pantry and know where things go. But sometimes you need to change things out, so a flexible system was also a must. For example, we recently finished up our Skinny Pop snack bags and wanted something different like pretzels. These labels can be wiped down with water, dried off and relabeled. Easy peasy!

My baby @pharaohthecavapoo turns 2 today🎉🎂🎉Being a part of his life this past year has brought me so much joy, especially on my low days.

If you’ve ever met Pharaoh, you know he’s filled with a lot of energy, a lot of personality and certainly a lot of love.

He’s one of the most attentive beings I have ever met. If you cough, sneeze or cry, he’ll come running to your side to lick you up and down with love. 🤍

We start all of our mornings giving this one belly rubs in bed. At night, he knows when it’s bedtime and will run upstairs racing to claim his spot — even if that means leaving little to no room for mommy and daddy to get into their own bed.

May this good boy have many more happy birthdays to come. 🥳

I remember being an awe of the speakers and their work. I thought how cool would it be if I could get in front of a group of dozens or even hundreds and share my experience. Maybe I could inspire someone the way others have inspired me.

Flash forward to today, and people are willing to STAND for nearly an hour to hear what I and my friend and colleague @naomeyeee have to say. People came up to us afterwards to thank us for our advice and encouragement. Some even wanted to take pictures with us.

Our stories matter. Your story matters.

Hard to believe I’m 20 weeks pregnant 🤰🏾 The last five months have been a roller coaster. This week brought me a lot of peace:

▪️I gave @artofchristianlove props for convincing me to go to a salon and have my hair done. Everyone at the salon agreed, he was a smart man because I have SOOOO much hair even a non-pregnant person would be exhausted washing and styling it on their own! 💆🏾‍♀️

▪️I’ve enjoyed fiber-packed smoothies just as much as coffee-flavored ice cream 😋 (Note: these aren’t cravings, just fuel that doesn’t give me heartburn.)

▪️I listened to my body more, acknowledging when I needed to rest and embraced the moments when I get those workouts I love so much in 💪🏾

Some people call us nerds. Others say we’re information freaks. I like to think we’re simply empathetic global citizens who care to know more about the histories and cultures from around the world. 🌍

Yes, I miss being on vacation.

Possible architectural design plans include:
📸 1 and 2 - The Parthenon aka the temple dedicated to goddess Athena that everyone marvels at when they visit the Acropolis
📸 3 - Temple of Hephaestus aka one of the most intact temples dedicated to Hephaestus; can be found in the Ancient Agora
